Barrel Top Wagons – DEBI 2015 Member Award Finalist

Barrel Top Wagons design and make beautiful, unique wooden structures here in Devon. Sustainability and good environmental practice is central to the ethos of our business. The business was born from a desire to produce alternative living, holiday and work space using the wonderful timber available here in the south west, taking our inspiration from the classic designs of the past. There are many offerings within our industry made from unsustainable, imported and / or low quality materials, meaning they have a short lifespan, require high maintenance and offer not much in the way of comfort and warmth.  We wanted to use traditional mortise and tenon carpentry methods, combined with modern day construction practice to produce something solid, substantial and beautiful. We have forged relationships with local millers and timber merchants and use local softwoods, such as Douglas fir and larch grown in Devon and Cornwall, as well as incorporating many other environmentally sound materials and practices to make bespoke, stunning structures which will have a lifespan of 50 years and more.

We encourage the concept of low-impact living, and indeed live in one of our larger, living wagons ourselves. Our wagons, cabins and lodges are super insulated with Earthwool and can include all manner of bespoke features – from wood burners to kitchens, bathrooms to bedrooms – to make them a beautiful, functional space to live in year round. We make and promote the use of compost and dry toilets, and offer solar technology as part of the energy provision within the structures.  The wood burners we supply are made in Devon by The Windy Smithy and can come with a side oven and / or back boiler. Barrel Top Wagons is committed to constantly reviewing our waste management and improving our sustainability practices. We now process all of our sawdust either as bio-logs, in conjunction with Devon Bio-fuels, for use in compost toilets, or for small holders. We encourage paperless correspondence, use recycled paper for any printed promotional material, and manage our recycling.
